Muireann Bradley, Ireland’s Roots and Blues Prodigy | Acoustic Guitar Sessions

Muireann Bradley, a young musician based in rural Ireland, is just one of countless acoustic guitarists around the world to enter the woodshed with grit and determination during the lockdown phase of the Covid pandemic. But what sets her apart is that she was only 13 years old at the time and emerged with a repertoire of vintage blues and folk songs that she sings and plays with great authenticity and conviction, not to mention a prodigious fingerstyle technique.
Now 17, Bradley first became inspired to pick up the guitar by listening to Robert Johnson, Blind Blake, Reverend Gary Davis, and other blues pioneers with her musician father, in addition to hearing him picking around the house. Her earliest videos caught the attention of Josh Rosenthal of Tompkins Square Records, who recently released her debut album, I Kept These Old Blues. As the title suggests, it’s a collection of the standards that resonate most with her.
In this exclusive video, filmed at St Anne’s Church of Ireland churchyard, in Ballyshannon, Bradley performs three classic songs: Reverend Gary Davis’ version of “Candyman,” Blind Blake’s “Police Dog Blues,” and Memphis Minnie’s “When the Levee Breaks.” She also provides some insights into their history. To achieve a period-correct sound, she plays her Gibson LG-2 reissue; a Waterloo WL-S Deluxe, with its ladder bracing; and her personal favorite, an X-braced Waterloo WL-14X, whose V-shaped neck she finds feels the most like home.

There is nobody playing these songs better than her right now. Period. Dare I say... she plays Police Dog Blues better than Ry Cooder. She will keep these songs alive for another generation with this level of playing. It is so thrilling to see this and I cannot wait to see what happens in the future with her.
chheck out nora brown - not saying she is better lol
Blind Boy Paxton is another that's been doing great stuff with old time. Not to detract from Muireen, but there are plenty of people doing great things in all kinds of music, you just have to seek it out a bit.
@@herecomeseveryone7562 indeed there are others but Muireann and Norah are the two youngest I am aware of you should check out Larkin Poe as well if you havent - yes lots of great stuff about and paradoxically with all the research sources they do take a while to find sometimes
Rory Block is still going strong.
@@herecomeseveryone7562Blind boy Paxton is probably the "best" today in my opinion, although he has way more experience than her. But she's gonna be even better real soon which I'm so happy about. She's probably gonna reach a broader audience than Paxton because, hopefully, because being a young female that is gorgeous and super talented she'll have it easier to gain a following with younger generations and older. She's gonna keep this genre alive for awhile. She's awesome
I’m 71 years old and figured I’d seen and heard almost everything on the guitar. This stunned me.
Ever since I was 11 years old, I would listen to most of my favorite bands like AC/DC, Ozzy, Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, The Doors, Fleetwood Mac, Beatles and many more
One day I stumbled upon Robert Johnson, Rev. Gary Davis, Skip James, Leadbelly, Geeshie Wiley, Memphis Minnie, Blind Lemon, Tommy Johnson, Son House, Willie Brown, Charlie Patton, Blind Blake. The more I listened the more I hear Rock n Roll and Soul.
These black southerners are the endless pavement road what is Modern Music. Im 27 still listening to Robert Johnson everyday for many years including Eric Clapton's Robert Johnson versions, I cant get back into my Generation's Music. I still lose my breath when I hear Robert Johnson.
It sounds like a cry for help. I love Ms Bradley's playing she makes me pick up the guitar because there's people in my Generation Z that will listen to 20's 30's music.
Ms Bradley is a breath of fresh air.
Enjoy this, life is like that, it trips and shakes you up when you have almost given up hope of good things happening again, Then along something that is truly great, beautiful and real like Muireann Bradley and her music, she is alot like the great Rory Galagher in her ways of thinking, her playing and the great music history that she knows
You got me beat, grrl❤ sixty -five, lookin forward to next ten, she's wonderful 👍 James Bradshaw, yep! You summed it up beautifullytoo
Was you say is great, not you havenot got to listen to Rory Gallagher, Thin Lizzy, Gary Moore, their music will blow your socks off your feet
@@kaecake9575 and not for more socking brilliant music your will have to listen to CCR , Rory Gallagher, Thin Lizzy, Gary Moore, their music will blow your socks off your feet and you will be the happiest person in the world
In case you didn't know, Dads are critically important to the development of our young ladies. This father should be lauded not only for sharing music with his daughter, but for raising her as a positive influence in her life. She can literally do anything in this world.
Well said. For those of us lucky enough to have a good father-daughter bond (paternal filial relationship) we are truly blessed. Mine doesn’t play the guitar, although it’s hugely rewarding to see her grow into a fine young woman.
Was thinking much the same- a fine job of parenting by Muireann's dad. Props to her pops!
Could not agree more! Ever heard of a rock band called The Warning? 3 sisters from Mexico. Their father is not a musician but he and their mother have supported their daughters throughout their musical career to the point that today The Warning is poised to break into the collective consciousness of the world wide Rock genre! Good parenting is always essential!

Can't even digest what I am seeing here? Most flawless pre-wars country blues picked and played by a young Irish girl with a mesmerising voice..it is all simply too amazingly good!? :-0 I'm as astonished as I am impressed, just amazing!
Agree 100%! Thanks for writing what I was thinking!!
I feel the same, the first time I heard her album I nearly cried, unreal talent
Holy Mackrell! I couldn't have said it better!
Took the words right out of my mouth. Muireann has phenomenal talent. Her version of Candyman causes me numerous sharp intakes of breath and brings a tear to my eye every time I hear it.......and believe me, I've heard it a good few times since seeing her on Jools Holland on New Year's Eve.
Muireann's album is an absolute delight to listen to. I sincerely hope she gets the recognition her incredible ability deserves.
@@rogerd9150Love your expression too!! Haven't heard that in a LONG time! 😂 Thanks.
Blows my mind how talented this girl is, I thought I was cool at 16 because I could play the house of the rising sun, this is next level talent
Haven't found any treasure for some time on RUclips. Today I found gold!
Once in a while RUclips’s algorithm presents you with a gold nugget, and this is one of them. Wonderful music played by an incredibly talented musician. I enjoyed it thoroughly!

A virtuoso fingerpicker with a voice that is perfectly suited to this beautiful art form. Wow! I just love what she's doing!
👏You have done American Blues music a great service. Memphis Minnie would be proud of your rendition of her song!
Ireland is proud of your talent and tenacity. You are going to be up there with the greats.
This is uncommon talent. Wonderful artistry and technical prowess, plus genuine love for the form and history of the music… wrapped in a humble, quiet young Irish gal, and if that don’t beat all, then I don’t know what will, or can. I’m gobsmacked, is all.
She's one in one hundred million. To play like that AND sing is unreal. God bless you and your dad.
And the heavens aligned when this one was born.
How she can sing and play so breath takingly at the same time is beyond me. Amazing.
Agree, and in a lovely syncopated rhythm at times.
A lot of practice, plus talent directly from God.
are you new to music?

I love how she says "and also played more modern players like Stefan grossman." 😅 She's awesome
makes me proud to be irish ❤ go girl your father must be the proudest man in ireland .love your style of playing ...belfast ....
This nearly made me cry…we are living in a folk music revival and when I first got into roots music and blues 7 years ago I thought I’d never see the day….what an absolute talent and carrying on traditional folk music from my beloved country….I couldn’t be happier to hear this amazing soul sing and play so brilliantly…incredible
Lady, you've got it. I'm an American, longtime blues lover, and also huge fan of Rory Gallagher...one of the best. And you should be proud. You've got that spirit...the feeling and innuendos and rhythm of the blues. Congratulations. Thank you .
Ireland has a new Rory Gallagher.....and she is still only a child. What a future awaits. Stunning.
Wow.
Just Wow. Merci beaucoup.
I don't know what was more impressive, playing those licks or singing.
Or doing them together.
Doing them together.
And keeping the stories of the songs and the artists alive.
Did I say Wow?
I really meant to say Wow.
Well said! Couldn’t agree more. 💜👏👏👏👏
Her version of When the Levee Breaks is the best I've ever heard.
Because of people like her, the blues will always survive!! Love her rendition of When The Levee Breaks
It gives me soooo much hope to listen to her play. Completely stumbled on this, randomly slid the search bar, landed on her saying “Stefan Grosman” and thought “what? Did I just hear…” then she said “…Blind Blake..” then started playing. WOW was I so pleasantly surprised.
This is fantastic!
Brilliant all round. Seeing today's youth keeping these treasures alive gives me hope after decades of unworthy music.
Thank you, miss for your love of classics and obviously putting in many hours to become proficient. Your right hand is doing just fine ;-)
Your honesty and genuine heart and soul really shines through.
Many blessings and much success!
Just stumbled on this posting and what a revelation! Muireann clearly has an intuitive feel for this old pre-war blues music. I discovered American country blues guitar music at the age of fifteen courtesy of John Pearse's UK TV series 'Hold Down a Chord'. He featured Mississippi John Hurt, Rev. Gary Davis, Big Bill Broonzy and Sam McGee. Now, at the age of 71 I still love to play the old country/delta blues music on acoustic guitar. It warms the cockles of this old heart to see that young people like Muireann are carrying the torch into the future for the old blues musicians who were tragically neglected in their own time.
I can definitely agree with everything you say. The only difference is that, I’m 74.
@@johnthompson2496And I'm 77, live in Australia, grew up in the hot dry outback! And I wholeheartedly agree with both of you!!
@@bianchaesson1441 that’s good to know. Keep on enjoying it👍. I used to play BB’s Police Dog Blues in open E about 40 years ago, but the top E string kept on breaking, so I gave up on that one. Sad, it’s such a great song to play and Muireann does it so well.
She channels the spirit of the late, great English blueswoman, JoAnn Kelly. Muireann actually plays her guitars with more proficiency than JoAnn and I sense that her voice will mature even more and she evolves and will become one of Ireland's greatest musicians.
God blessed her with amazing talent and I will enjoy the rest of my years following her emerging career as a blues artist.
Hope she can get the states to get a taste of Clarksdale, Ms, New Orleans, Memphis, Macon, and the whole Southern musical experience.

Ms Bradley is a breath of fresh air. I can't wait for her to play Robert Johnson 🥰
The kid has soul! Her spirit flies with the old masters of the blues. She’s already a master herself! Thank you! Inspiring and uplifting! The world is in good hands.
Don't bet on her having reached her peak, she will
mature as woman and Artist.
This is why we have to expose our young people to music. Creativity lives on. She is lovely and incredibly talented.
The Irish and Scottish accents, it is said, is what our Southern accent comes from. So your Blues sounds excellent and natural. Your playing is superb!
I'm from Ms...met a lady visiting from Scotland and she told me the southern dialect was from Scotland..this sounds so much like blue grass and blues.
@@janicemeier252816:37 I believe they called this genre Delta Style Blues
@@tracylitz1872 beautiful sound.
The Northern Irish and Scottish accents are very similar. They both use a lot of the same words, and the Scots had a Gaelic language before they spoke English.
@@tracylitz1872
This isn’t Delta blues…that’s from the Mississippi region. This is more ragtime, Piedmont blues from the southeastern States.
All abord the Muireann Bradley Train she is a credit to her family and Ireland 🇮🇪 this adventure will be a lot of fun
Rory Gallagher smiling down from Heaven 😅
She can sang and pick for Irelands Bayou 😢🇮🇪...
Donegal..
Charming and talented ✨️ to boot.....Incredible.
Love her attack and swing. Spirited and uplifting.
You have a gift, young lady! I'm blown away by your talent and authenticity!
I could see her opening for Billy Strings or Larkin Poe!
Put a Grammy in this young woman’s hands!🤗
I believe that she is similar to the very great Rory Gallagher, she does this from her heart and soul just because she loves the music and stories so much
@@jamesbradshaw3389 Were he still alive, I'm sure Rory G. would be hugely impressed with young Muireann.
Donovan had a version of Candy Man and Ry Cooder Police Dog Blues which I grew up with and loved. And of course Zeppellen When the Levee breaks. This young girl is fantastic!❤
So, I will be spending 2024 learning all these licks. To say I am blown away is an understatement. Well done, ma’am!
Breathtaking. I am stunned at the old soul trapped in your young heart. A bright future ahead for you Muireann.
She's not trapped in a young body .... she's been educated into this wonderment by her father's ways. It got into her soul!! I guess you meant her ability is that of an older seasoned singer/player, and YES!!
She is brilliant and is starting to get the recognition she deserves. Her album is wonderful.
What a gifted talent. So nice to see a young person keeping these songs alive for the next generation. If every family had a musical father daughter relationship like she describes, the world will be a better place.
This young woman’s got talent. Super nice tone and touch!
Her voice would be perfect on an American film movie soundtrack, flawless and perfect, precision vocals
Congratulations to Dad and daughter. This is so good.
Thanks Muireann!! You are a powerful historian providing a tremendous service to music traditions.
Wow, what a talented girl. I never imagined I would hear an Irish girl sing and play tge blue's like a grassroots American. This is the start of something big. Love the way she sings candy man, something about her tone and key. Beautiful guitar playing. I hope there's leads more to come. Also impressed that she knows the background of each song 😊
Went to Bandcamp and bought Muireann's first album, great stuff. Very glad to find a young artist playing acoustic blues and loving the old time greats. Thanks Muireann!
Refreshing to see this music being kept alive in the age of Auto-tune. I grew up hearing my grandfather, great uncle, and others from Oklahoma and Arkansas, playing rural blues on acoustics, washboard, harpsichords, harmonica, washtub bass, accordion, slide guitar, Jews harps... Much success to Muireann.
Wow, she's blowing up. All over american and British TV this month. Good job
I’m simply amazed and awed by her gift and talent. She plays and sounds great.
Bravo! I just downloaded your album. It’s beautiful! Thank you RUclips algorithm gods!
This girls playing and singing makes me feel great, shes a super talent and a breath of fresh air. Admittedly, I'd never heard of her until I was blown away by her performance of this song on Jools Holland on New years eve. Absolutely amazing.
I am immediately in love with your speaking, story telling , playing and singing. You are way better than you likely realize😂❤
Wow…absolutely tremendous. Ireland is right to be very proud of this wonderful talent.
Her playing is so clean and precise. Truly remarkable.
I absolutely love it when the algorithm brings me amazing young talents like Muireann and simply blows my mind! She's so young and just imagine how much better she will be in 5-10 years! I'm just simply in awe 😲
Clearly a great guitarist. These are very difficult pieces and she plays them brilliantly. But I am also impressed with her knowledge of pioneers of this music and her respect for the roots of the music. Credit to her father who passed on his love of this musical traditions. He must be so proud of the talented young woman.
Was just wondering how many folks actually in Memphis are familiar with Memphis Minnie nowadays!
Absolutely brilliant, love it 👏👏👏. Your a great blues 🎸 player and singer 👌🇮🇪 🇮🇪.
Greetings from Oregon! My grand-daughter and husband are in Dublin area. He is native. I am 83 and grew up with the blues you love and play as a master! I have 3 daughters! Much love and blessings to you! 😎👑🙏❤️🇺🇸
Lovely message Ken, hi from Dublin, Ireland 🍀☘️🌈. Muireann is marvellous 🥰🤩
Absolutely loved every note. Especially your traditional version of When the Levee breaks. I'm 70, and many think of that as a Led Zeppelin "original." Thank you for keeping this style alive and well !
Muireann, you are a treasure. Thanks for sharing this delightful music with us.
I love it!! As a big fan of Jorma Kaukonen/Hot Tuna in the states, it’s wonderful to see this young lady ‘s appreciation for this musical style . Her musicianship is spot on and the tone of her voice adds a certain realism for the time. You made my day!
Extraordinary. She plays like I always dreamed of playing.

Just beautiful! I’m astonished.
Brings a tear to my eye.
Somebody get in touch w/ Ry Cooder ASAP…
He really needs to see/hear this jewel of a young lady.
I think ol` Ry is aware of this gem by now.
As soon as she started playing I immediately thought of Ry Cooder.
After a long work week, I was exhausted and came upon Muireann and she made my day.
What a lovely comment. Hope she sees it.
Since her version of Police Dog Blues showed up on my RUclips algorithm a few years ago, I've been in awe of this young lady's talent. Nice to see these old tunes being passed to a new generation.
Same here. My blues fingerstyle teacher told me he’s been trying to master Police Dog Blues for 30 years.
I’ve been listening to Blind Blake for a long time and that’s probably the best I’ve heard. I love your voice as well. Pure magic. Thanks!
Wow ,glad I visited her video. She is truly amazing and gifted, my ears are smiling.
This gives me a lot of pride. I love to hear the music of the United States so appreciated across the ocean.
Wow! This is a great gift to the musical community, really a very special moment in my life to witness your amazing talent- also special thanks to your Dad for bringing this sweet prodigy into the world and giving the guidance and support- along with real apparent love for his daughter who I’m sure is one of the most wonderful gifts anyone could have in their lives! 🙏
Now THAT is a beautiful wholistic response!!❤🎉😊
Kudos to your father for influencing you, you’re a precious gift! Guitar has been passed for generations, at least three I know of, in our family and hopefully will continue to. You go girl!
Incredible playing, singing and feel! I’m so happy for the blues!
The closest thing I can relate about your knowledge of source material and mastery of your idols is, "It's like having your soul massaged!" And I thank you so much for brightening my day and thank the crazy algorythm for leading me to you. Ta.
Wow. I love this style of music. When I was in college around 1980 I saw Roy Bookbinder several times. He was a tremendous performer. He lived with and learned from Reverend Gary Davis and he knew Pink Anderson, a blues musician whose first name was taken for the band Pink Floyd. Anyway no one I currently know has ever heard of Roy Bookbinder, but this young lady knows and appreciates his music.
Check out our Session with Roy Bookbinder here: ruclips.net/video/PO-YAYQ8-Nw/видео.html
I love it when I come across something like this that is so unique, so different and so good! She’s very good musician. Wish her well in her career.
Wow! I love your playing, singing and song choices. I hope you make many albums - I’ll buy them all! ❤ 👍👍 - Tim from Detroit, Michigan
Wow! Impressive for sure. This young lady’s picking is fantastic and her voice is great too. I love these old blues type songs she’s choosing to sing and play.👍👍
Pure and absolute class Muireann...we're all proud of you....excellent stuff.
Stunnnnnnnnnnnning! Thanks for sharing!
Such dexterity and authenticity demonstrated on Police Dog Blues in particular. I feel so uplifted by this young lady exhuming these 1920s classic songs and playing them so well 🎉🎉🎉
This young lady has a true artistic talent and is situated on a extremely high level on the instrument plus she’s got that independence between the respiration of the the music and the singing, so few people and only the greatest, thinking about Robert Johnson. She is there for ever now at this point. And the cherry on top of this is her voice will mature in a marvelous way with the time. Good luck with you and your incredible talent young lady!
Absolutely blown away dear. Wow, you really channel the old 20's sound quite perfectly. I cant wait to hear more songs from you! ❤🎉
I’m more of a jazz player, but this was really lovely…what a proud dad, what a talented daughter!
Muireann, I just love your soul. What wonderful performances of each song. Thank you so much!
Seems like there's a wealth of prodigious young players that come to online prominence lately, I expected one thing here but got another. Chills running down my spine. Magnificent work, I would wish you luck, but you don't need it. Just keep working hard, you're doing great.
'When Irish eyes are smiling....' my Dad used to sing.
Superb. Keep going!
Oh my!! What a gift…..the old blues music is in great hands! Thanks.
Lotta heart and soul..ah the Irish DNA..Love it..She's got it!
What I really like about this video, apart from the prodigious talent that's on display, is that we can watch the amazing left hand finger work. The speed of some of those changes, especially in When the Levee Breaks is awesome - at times just a blur!
Muireann you play the blues like a traditional roots musician! Wonderful talent you have.
I could listen and watch Muireann all day shes truly a gift ..❤
That' s some damn good picking 👍👍👍 Great voice. Its beyond me how play and simultaneously sing .

I've just watched this video for probably the fifteenth time and thought exactly the same about a Tiny Desk Concert. 👍
If you haven't got Muireann's album yet, I can absolutely recommend it. What an incredible talent this young lady possesses.
I would have been impressed with just your singing. I would have been impressed with just the way you rocked that guitar. The effortless way you put them flawlessly together though, is just amazing!
Fantastic, simply sublime. She sounds like a teenage Rory Block, and that’s high praise, indeed.
Hope to keep seeing &,hearing you ,really inpressive .❤
